This pattern shows the speaker's intention, planning, or willingness.
- is only used with action verbs
- tense is expressed in the final 하다 portion
- conversely, negation is expressed in the verb that this pattern is attached to
- 고자 (without the 하다) can be used as a connective between two clauses synonymously with -(으)려고. In this manner it can attach to any action verb and shows the purpose of said action.
Examples:
저는 그 것을 반대하고자 합니디ㅏ./I plan to oppose it.
내주에 미국에 가고자 해요./I intend to go to the U.S. next week.
책을 분배하고자 했어요./I intended to distribute the book.
정근 씨는 도와 주지 않고자 해요./I'm not willing to help Jong-geun.
딸한테 주고자 강아지를 샀아요./I bought the puppy to give to my daughter.
