This pattern indicates a cause or reason and can be attached to any verb. The reason goes in the first clause, before -기 때문에.

- tense is normally attached to the main clause
- can have -요 attached to form an uncompleted sentence (i.e. You did that because...?)
- can be attached to nouns if the -기 is dropped
- tends to be used with formal/written language rather than colloquial speech
- can not be followed by a command or suggestive

Examples:
숙제를 너무 많이 해야 하기 때문에 영화를 볼 수 없었어요./Because I had too much homework that I had to do, I couldn't see the movie.
