This pattern is used to describe a change from one condition to another.

- used with both action and descriptive verbs, but mostly with descriptive verbs
- when used after an action verb, it makes an intransitive action verb with a passive meaning. Only a small number of action verbs can do this and they are usually listed in the dictionary with the 어(아, 여)지다 attached already as a separate entry.
- the negation and/or tense comes in the final 지다 of this pattern
- 아 지다 is used with the final vowel of the verb it attaches to is a 아 or 오
- 어 지다 is used with the final vowel of the verb it attaches to is any other vowel
-여지 attaches to the 하다 verb
- sometimes this pattern appears with no space between the 어(아, 여) and 지다 (i.e. 아지다/어지다/여지다).
